Uncovering Communication Potential in Minimally Verbal Autism Spectrum Disorder

Research Goal

What we are studying In this study, we are characterizing and modeling communication in individuals with autism spectrum disorder who are minimally verbal (mv-ASD). We are doing so by using on-body and off-body devices to measure communication patterns including facial fine motor movements and vocalizations. Why it is important There is a huge gap in the application of technologies in helping individuals with mv-ASD learn to speak, discover their own voice, or communicate. The long term goal of this research is to develop technologies to promote communication in individuals with mv-ASD. What we hope to accomplish The hope is to develop technologies to help individuals with minimally-verbal ASD communicate more effectively.

Eligibility

Participants must be 18-40 years old with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and must be minimally verbal. Subjects will be asked to complete: - 3-4 in-person visits at the Lurie Center in Lexington, MA - An IQ test - Speech and language clinical assessments - Parent/caregiver questionnaires - An experimental session using both on-body and off-body devices If needed, there may be virtual visits before the experimental session, so that subjects can get familiar with the devices used in the study. Subjects may take home mock devices to get used to wearing them before the experimental session. Project activities may include: Survey Office visit Estimated Time Commitment 3 sessions over 1 year
