Now more than ever, advocacy is needed to ensure that autistic people who require lifetime/round-the-clock care are seen, heard, and supported in meaningful ways.
One of the absolute highlights of the recent Profound Autism Summit was Governor Maura Healey's speech.
I had the pleasure of sitting in the front row as she shared her remarks about her plan for profound autism. Seated next to me was the NIH Deputy Director of Program Direction, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives, Nicole Kleinstrauer. In the audience (which included over 1,000 attendees from 43 states) were caregivers, researchers, siblings, grandparents, providers, educators, and self-advocates.
Also in attendance were 11 of the 13 NIH Autism Data Science Initiative grantees, the National Autism Coordinator, and the chair of the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee. The room was filled with energy and hope.
No matter your political affiliation, you're likely to be inspired by Governor Healey’s remarks about her recent executive order supporting adults with profound autism.
This moment didn’t happen by accident. (And admittedly, there remains much work to be done.) But this is a template that can be utilized nationwide.
States can and should implement plans for profound autism, whether through executive or legislative action. I hope you'll consider doing what you can to join the effort.
